The Mosque

Masjid ibn Taymeeyah also known as Brixton Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre is a diverse multicultural Muslim community that began to form in the early to mid 1970's. Comprising born Muslims and an increasing number of reverts, community members would meet in each other's homes for worship and to offer support to one another.

In the 1980s, after the death of Brother 'Umar (a prominent member of the emerging Muslim community), his home at 25 Bellesfields Road was converted into a mosque for the Muslim community. This Mosque was known as "The Brixton Jamaat Centre". Our Imams during this period included Imam Rashid, a qualified Imam from Ghana and Brother Amin, a Nigerian studying for his doctorate in London. However, because this building was a residential building Lambeth Council evicted us from it. Praise be to Allah, this eviction did not caused us any inconvenience because we had by then founded a Housing Cooperative and were able to move straight away into one of its short-life property in Ferndale Road, Brixton.Shaikh Sallah Janneh was subsequently appointed as the community's Imam.

The community continued to expand, until 1990 the move was made to the current location at No. 1 Gresham Road, a much more suitable building. At first this building was divided into three sections: Masjidullah (the Mosque), Iqra Girl School (the school) and Alshahada Office (our housing cooperative office). As the community evolved it was managed by a series of administrations, until the present management assumed the position in 1994. The new management continues to educate and consolidate the community upon the pure foundations of Islam, according to the creed, understanding and methodology of Islam's pious predecessors. Eventually, Masjidullah was renamed Masjid ibn Taymeeyah and the girl school and cooperative office were moved to other locations.

The new management is continually introducing various developments, including the evolving of Iqra Girl School into two independent primary schools (for boys and girls). These schools have now been amalgamated into one school and a sister organisation to the mosque known as Iqra Independent School. The school educates the children in Quraan memorisation, Arabic language, Islamic Studies and the National Curriculum subjects and is additionally proceeding towards full registration in accordance with the governmental (DfES & OFSTED) regulations.

Over the last 9 years, the new Management propogates the true call of understanding Islam, through the Quraan and Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassalam) upon the understading of our pious predecessors. To this end, the Centre has hosted a series of Islamic seminars, bringing credible and well known students of knowledge from around the Muslim world, who have contributed largely to the overall development, both spiritual and otherwise, of those fortunate to have attended the Masjid. By the grace of Allah, the Muslim community in Brixton, and its surrounding areas, has grown exponentially over the past 30 years, and Masjid ibn Taymeeyah has continue to witness a large influx of new Muslims and "returnees" (to Islam). The management team endeavers to impart to the members of the community the importance of following the pure and knowledge-based creed, methodology and practice of the pious predecessors. The diverse multicultural attendees of the Centre are catered for, as much as is possible, in many of their religious, social and domestic affairs.
